Jane Wolfe Diary Entry Monday, 5 October 1942
The same day Culling [Louis Culling] arrived from San Diego, felt sorry for a damsel in distress, offered his shack near Fallbrook and a small sum to look after the place. So there she went Friday the 2nd for a month. And a lonely month it will be for her!
Then Jonas got up his dander and left.
Joe [Joe Miller] feels "death" in the place. This may be lack of Phyllis [Phyllis Seckler], of course. Might it be something about myself? Changes are taking place in me, but I don't know their nature. I have entered a new phase with Joe, one not occasioned by Phyllis' departure, for it took place before anything was said about going. A brooding, yearning, aching, serious state? I don't know that anyone of these words fits, but they do sound very, very sexy.
