Another incredible incident. At fork of Richmond Hill & Petersham Road I was accosted by an oldish with another & a ditto man. She asked the way to the river. I pointed: “Just down there & you come to the bridge”. She wagged her head sagely: “No, it’s the other side” and waved at Barnes! So I: “Perhaps you’ll find it on top of the hill. That’s where rivers usually are, isn’t it?” That seemed good sense to her: and up the hill they plodded. Spread of Physical Geography!
