About 10.10 P.M. to 10.35 P.M. May 28th 1914 E.V.
Have been sitting in an arm-chair waiting for R. who is out on a visit. I had intended to make something of the Third Question to-night, but conditions were not of the best, so I did not make a Ceremonial start.
However, while sitting here, I closed my eyes and decided to get what I could as a preliminary.
I did not try to "travel" but just
raised the consciousness and formulated

The first impression that came to me was to surround myself
with emerald green. I then meditated on the symbol, and the
thought of the energy of love came to me, and with it the
idea that this symbol was the exact reverse of the one
shadowed forth in the "Hanged Man" of the Taro, representing
self-sacrifice. I next seemed to see a naked man filled with
desire, and surrounded by a circle of dancing maidens, also
naked. Though filled with energy, he was unable to break
through the circle or to be satisfied by any particular
maiden. They seemed to whirl round him so that he was unable
to make choices.
and thought of the all-wandering air, moving truly, but
without any apparent change, being invisible. Then I
perceived the flight of an eagle. The bird soared in the
heavens, leaving no path behind it, and yet was ever the
watcher or seer, with its eye on the earth, on which it was
able to perceive even the minutest speck. It was free,
except for the illusion that it continually identified
itself with what it saw.
and there came a vision of a ship upon the sea, this ship
presently struck a rock and was sucked down into the depths
of the ocean, to rise no more. And I meditated upon this, as
the action of Tamas, or sloth. Once strike the earth and its
waters (or Tamas) will draw you down and hold you fast, more
surely than either the energy of
