Dear David,
May I wish you a Merry Xmas & all you wish yourself for the New Year. I was so sad to hear of [illegible] death.
A friend wrote it down from television & it was after 11 OClock at night,. It was too late.
I don't know if you have read Anthony Powell's Messengers of Day. I read it & it mentions your Father Richard.
I am enclosing a flash light of me. I look a bit wilted don't I? Nothing is happening to me. I go to the Pub which is next door.
I have three beers and come home. I can't drive now. How are you keeping. Tell me.

* David Garnett (1892–1981) was an author and wrote eleven novels as well as his autobiography; he edited the letters of T.E. Lawrence and the novels of Thomas Love Peacock. He and Francis Birrell started a bookshop; he helped found the Nonesuch Press and the publishing firm of Rupert Hart-Davis.
