New Book

A charming pen-portrait-portrait of Leon M. Lion, the actor, who lived in Marylebone, appears in “Some I Knew Well,” the latest book by Clifford Bax.

Mr. Bax recalls his friend Lion as a kind of Jekyll and Hyde—tyrannical when he was in the theatre, gay and delightful when he was either a host or a guest. He records that the actor’s rooms in Baker Street were cluttered up with curiosities, mostly Chinese—all very suitable, surely, to the region of Sherlock Holmes!

“The Wickedest Man in the World,” Aleister Crowley, provides another chapter. Mr. Bax knew Havelock Ellis, Stephen Phillips, George Russell (AE), W. B. Yeats and many others whose names will live. In his brilliant sketches he reveals many intimate, unusual details of their lives and characters.
