Y's Wives Club to Hear Speaker

The Cherokee Nation will be the topic discussed by Grady McMurtry, member of the Indian Club of the University of California, when he speaks before the Y’s Wives Club at 8 p.m. Monday at the Community YWCA, 2134 Allston Way.

McMurtry, who was born in Big Cabin, Okla., is of Scotch-Irish and Cherokee Indian ancestry. He is now working for his Ph. D. in political science at the University here.

He will discuss the history and present status of the Cherokees, tell of the “Trail of Tears,” and of Sequoyah, their great leader.

At the meeting on Aug. 21 members of the club will bring clothing to be sent to needy Cherokee families.

All young married women in the community are invited to attend the meeting Monday and others that are planned for the coming months. Shirley Baker is the club president. Additional information may be obtained from the YWCA, 2134 Allston Way.
