Confession of surprise at the appearance of a second number of “The Equinox” [The Equinox Vol. I, No. 2] might be thought offensive. We will not make it. But in noting the issue of No. II. Of that extraordinary five-shilling periodical—which Mr. Frank Harris and Mr. Aleister Crowley seem to have made the organ of a new sect of mystics—we feel bound to express a certain satisfaction that a preface is now included to explain more or less what it is all about and what the exponents of “scientific illuminism” are driving at. As Huck Finn remarked of the “Pilgrim’s Progress,” “the statements are tough,” but perhaps that was to be expected. We leave aspiring students of occultism to make what they can of them, merely added that if anyone wish to indulge in fortune telling by the method of Geomancy, or to be beguiled into hashish indulgence, or learn how to travel in the spirit vision, the “Equinox” may—possibly—help him to his desire. On the other hand it may not.
